The Associate Director/Director Urban Design/Architecture for Design + Planning & Economics Middle East, is a member of the D+P&E Middle East studio senior leadership team which operates as an integrated team across our virtual studio consisting of offices in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Jeddah, Riyadh and also smaller office bases across the region.

The Middle East Design + Planning & Economics team combines specialist skills in large-scale city planning, development master planning, landscape architecture public realm and concept architecture. The Middle East team regularly works with AECOM’s Europe, and other international teams to bring the best of AECOM’s world-class talents to meet client expectations on design lead complex projects.

This role is intended to strengthen the capacity of DP+E and AECOM more widely to meet the growing demand for architecturally led master planning and neighborhood-scale work in the Middle East. The candidate is expected to be an award-winning Architect/Urban Designer with a strong portfolio who is able to build solid, high-level client relationships, to business develop opportunities, position for, win and deliver new design work across the region. The right candidate will be a team player and who is able to lead and collaborate with our multi-disciplinary teams across the region and in EMEA to bid and deliver projects successfully, as well as helping raising the AECOM Design brand.

Responsibilities :
The Associate Director/Director Urban Design/Architecture, DP+E, will be report to the Vice President of DP+E, Middle East and will be responsible for the development of the concept architecture side of the DP+E plan, to align with the AECOM Buildings + Places and EMIA strategy for growth. This work will include supporting the overall business development plan and marketing activities to cultivate an enhanced presence and client base in the UAE and the wider Middle East market and secure future planning and design projects for the practice.

An important part of the role will be to identify and align with high-level influencers and clients both in government and the private sector, to demonstrate AECOM as the strategic consultant of choice for regional, urban development, architecture and infrastructure projects.

You would work alongside and support the Vice President of DP+E, ME for bidding and winning work activities and wider AECOM strategic commissions in collaboration with the Buildings + Places Middle East leader, regional leadership and Middle East strategic growth team.

You will also have coaching, influencing, mentoring and staff development responsibilities to ensure the delivery of high quality and timely outcomes in line with client requirements, providing technical counsel on projects, and client relationship marketing and management. They will also actively contribute to the team environment, staff development and retention.

Job Duties :
The Associate Director/Director Urban Design/Architecture, DP+E, will work with project teams to complete work in accordance with the budget and timelines for the client. You will also work as part of a senior management team and have business and leadership responsibilities. This will include but is not limited to:

+ Leads large scale projects overseeing the work of the team;

+ Acts as a primary point of contact for the client in large scale projects;

+ Contributes, from the onset of a project, to the design of innovative and progressive design solutions that reconcile the goals and priorities of AECOM with those of our clients while fostering opportunities for design and technical excellence;

+ Attends all design and project management meetings ensuring coordinated action is taken by the team;

+ Responsible for steering and influencing the design philosophy and approach of the company together with the other Associate Directors, Directors and VP;

+ Contributes to AECOM’s thought leadership by representing the company at conferences and events with the aim of promoting the company’s work and philosophy both locally and internationally;

+ Builds a network of professional relationships with existing and prospective clients;

+ Actively participates in marketing and business development, contributing to the development of new and existing areas of business.

+ Manage and/or participate in the preparation of contracts, service agreements, partnerships,

+ submissions, grant applications and funding arrangements.

+ Co-ordinate with other discipline leaders within DP+E and across the organisation to support strong collaboration and integrated planning and outcomes; and Liaise with the AECOM team on an EMIA and global scale with regard to such issues as assembling project teams and completing multi-office agreements

+ Work closely with the client, sub contractors and stakeholders to deliver high quality products in a

+ timely manner and manage relationships with the client and the local authorities

+ Attend briefings with the client to review project plans, and resolve any conflicts in design or

+ parameters of the work.

+ Provide project direction on a range of planning and design projects including: preparation of master plans, delivering guidance on planning and governance arrangements, implementation planning, building applications.

+ Ensuring expected outcomes, budget expenditures and established timeframes are met.

+ Manage and co-ordinate teams for projects covering a range of areas including: housing, design guidelines, strategic planning and master planning.

+ Ensure accuracy and quality of work in accordance with project scope within project parameters and client requirements.

+ Manage the presentation and report development for clients and play a key role in client management and client satisfaction.

+ Meet with and report to the Business Manager / Project Accountant on a regular basis to track project progress against the budget.

+ Issue invoices and resolve overdue payments when required in consultation with the Finance group and in accordance with AECOM standards.

+ Implement and use AECOM’s QA system within all project work and maintain and refine in-house standards, procedures, and policy.

+ Lead marketing efforts to current clients and be instrumental in identifying and attracting new clients.

+ Delegate aspects of the project to team members and oversee their delivery in a timely and accurate manner with agreed quality standards.

+ Participate in Regional and Firm-wide committees, forums and Practice Circles as required.

Minimum Requirements

+ 16+ years years post graduate experience in and most recently taking senior leadership roles in relevant projects

+ Proven experience successfully managing a team and multi-disciplinary project teams

+ Experience working in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the Middle East region will be considered favorably

+ A proven track record of successfully delivering a range of concept architecture, Urban design, master planning or large-scale city design/transit oriented development projects

+ Flexibility and breadth of experience and knowledge across the Architecture, master planning or urban planning area

+ A strong understanding of the range of specializations and disciplines that interact in Urban Design & Architecture projects and processes.

+ Extensive experience in the management of projects from proposal development to completion, including periodic project reviews

+ Proven ability to manage a team and manage multi-disciplinary project teams

+ Strong client management skills

+ Strong financial and budget management skills

+ Proven track record in successfully securing new work as well as maintaining existing contracts

+ Experience in both government and in private sector is preferred

+ Experience working in the Middle East will be highly regarded

+ Strong attention to detail

+ Outwardly collaborative with colleagues across teams, offices and regions

+ High level organisational and team coordination and management skills

+ Ability to mentor and provide critical feedback to staff

+ Ability to foster a team environment and practice open communication, a collaborative approach and work commitment

+ Ability to both lead and be part of a team

Additional Comments:
+ The role requires the successful candidate to be based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The role will also require frequent travel and commitments to deliver projects across KSA, UAE and the rest of the Middle East and Africa to collaborate with colleagues in other offices, get the best job done, support the team and deliver a quality product for the client in a timely manner.

Preferred Qualifications

+ A degree in Architecture or related disciplines

+ Completion of five or six-year architectural degree program;

+ M.Arch, B. Arch or B.Sc in Architecture (Urban Design or Landscape Architecture);

+ Additional degrees or qualifications in related fields will be considered favorably.

+ RIBA or AIA (or equivalent) chartered membership will be considered favorably
